USPSA Production Division — getting started guide for beginners

I’ve seen a lot of questions lately from people wanting to try USPSA but not knowing where to start. Here’s the guide I wish I’d had when I started.

Why Production Division for Beginners?
Production uses stock pistols (mostly Glocks, M&Ps, CZ P-10s) with minimal modifications allowed. This levels the playing field and lets you compete without spending money on competition-specific equipment. Your carry gun is probably legal in Production.

Equipment You Need:
– A USPSA-legal Production pistol (check the approved list at uspsa.org)
– At least 5 magazines (you’ll want 6-7)
– A USPSA-legal holster (strong-side OWB, no retention devices)
– At least 3 magazine pouches on your belt
– A USPSA-legal belt (1.5-1.75″ wide, stiff)
– Eye protection and ear protection (required on the range)

Your First Match:
Email the match director before your first match and tell them you’re a new shooter. Every club has new shooter orientation. You’ll shoot as a squad with a “safety officer” who will walk you through everything.

The Rules You MUST Know:
1. Keep your finger out of the trigger guard until you’re on target
2. Keep the muzzle pointed downrange always
3. Don’t draw until the start signal
4. If you’re confused, STOP and ask

Realistic Expectations:
Your first match you will have procedural errors. You will forget to reload. You will forget which way to go. This is normal and expected. Everyone had a first match. Just focus on being safe.

Good Starter Pistols:
– Glock 34 (most common, huge aftermarket)
– CZ P-10F (excellent trigger out of the box)
– S&W M&P 2.0 5″ (great value)
